Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

f451

Guy Montag is a fireman. His job is to burn books, which are forbidden, being the source of all discord and unhappiness. Even so, Montag is unhappy; there is discord in his marriage. Are books hidden in his house? The Mechanical Hound of the Fire Department, armed with a lethal hypodermic, escorted by helicopters, is ready to track down those dissidents who defy society to preserve and read books.
The classic dystopian novel of a post-literate future, Fahrenheit 451 stands alongside Orwell’s 1984 and Huxley’s Brave New World as a prophetic account of Western civilization’s enslavement by the media, drugs and conformity.
Bradbury’s powerful and poetic prose combines with uncanny insight into the potential of technology to create a novel which, decades on from first publication, still has the power to dazzle and shock. Continue reading

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

rogue-one

Friday Rogue One was released. This story is essentially Episode 3.9 in the StarWars franchise. My awesome boss once again rented a theater for the entire company and we got to see the movie on opening day for free! Yes I have the best boss in the entire world. I don’t say this because I think he will read my blog, as I doubt he will ever see this post. I say it because I do have a great boss.

I thoroughly enjoyed Rogue One, and although I am not of the opinion that it is one of the best Star Wars movies, it does rate above the prequels. My favorites are still The Empire Strikes back and Force Awakens. I definitely rank this a Must See movie at 4.5 star rating.

four and a half stars

Yes,  if you continue reading this post will contain spoilers. If you haven’t seen Rogue One, I highly suggest you not read this post further. Additionally, I highly recommend reading Catalyst (or listening on Audible) before seeing the movie as it is episode 3.5/3.7ish in the time line and explains much of what is missing in the movie, and gives you a better insight into some of the choices made by characters such as Galen Erso, Orson Krennic and Jyn Erso. It also gives you a good look at Orson Krennic our bad guy for Rogue One.

Freed (Phoebe Meadows book 2) by Amanda Carlson

Freed
Amanda Carlson

Phoebe hasn’t had it easy since being struck. She’s been tossed through the 9 realms, and along the way found Fenrir (hunka hunka wolf) her boyfriend and Tyr (her half brother). Life at the Valkyrie Stronghold hasn’t been a cake walk either, although she’s getting stronger and learning to fight. When an old friend comes and tells her that if she doesn’t move quickly all chances of getting her mother back will be lost, yet more adventures come her way.

Phoebe’s ability to inspire loyalty among those she meets is amazing and she has a knack of finding the people she needs to succeed in her tasks. In this book we meet a whage (White Mage), a Milf (Not what you think it is), and Baldur the Norse god of light.

Again Amanda seamlessly wove mythology into our world, and you barely notice the liberties she took. You really have to know your (Norse) mythology to catch the inconsistencies.

You will love the antics Phoebe gets into and I loved the ending.

I do wonder if we meet Hermod in the next book.

Must read. 5 Stars

New Projects (Beta Reading)

As many of you have seen my reading has been put on hold with exception of audible books for the last couple of weeks.

The reason for this is that I’ve taken the opportunity to beta read for an author friend of mine.

I’m thoroughly enjoying the experience of working with the author to provide feedback on a first (rough) draft of their book. Seeing the book evolve from a rough draft to a more polished draft has been quite the entertaining and enlightening experience.

I’ve learned a few lessons in beta reading (both past and present), and there are some that I was taught before I ever beta read. I thought I would pass some tips along.
