Solo: A Star Wars Story

Solo: A Star Wars Story was released last week. I was able to see the movie over the holiday weekend. Solo is the story behind how Han ended up with the Melinium Falcon and did the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs.  For those who are quite geekily inclined, a parsec is a unit of distance, not time, so in Episode IV when Han is bragging about completing the Kessel Run in under 12 parsecs you automatically assume it’s a measurement of time. They clear up the confusion on this by explaining it is a distance, and why no one else is/was willing to do the run in under 20 parsecs.

I won’t spoil the movie any further than what is above. I will say I think the movie was good, but not great.

Now to my thoughts on the cast & characters

The rumors about the acting abilities of Alden Ehrenreich were just that. Rumors. His acting was very good. I loved much about his past and his attitude. He was the right amount of broody and optimistic and very much is the man the Han (Harrison Ford) we grew up with became.

Chewie is well just Chewie and awesome.

Danny Glover was AMAZING as Lando, and sounded just like Billy Dee Williams, although he didn’t look quite like him, he channeled Billy’s Lando perfectly.  I was not at all disappointed with how Lando was portrayed.

Then we have our Droid (comic relief) L3-37.  There were times she was spot on, and others where it got downright awkward. I think they got the balance 100% correct.

Qi’Ra is the love interest of Han. She is a very complex character, and her story is quite interesting. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I was pleasantly surprised at how this character’s story arc was done.

The rest of the characters were wonderful and well portrayed.  There were surprises through the whole movie, and those who are not familiar with the animated series of Clone Wars and Rebels may be shocked by some of the surprises.

Overall I will give this movie 3.5 stars out of 5.  It was good. Not Great.
